Winter Skincare for Your Body

For many, the cold winter months bring along a host of irritating skin problems. From dry skin to redness and inflammation, it’s safe to say that winter is most definitely not kind to skin!

Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to help stave off skin problems this season. Here’s how you can keep your skin smooth and healthy –all winter long.

While it may sound basic, moisturizing your skin is one of the most important things you can do to keep it soft and healthy. As the weather changes, you may also want to change your moisturizer. Look for ointments that are oil-based rather than water-based, as oil-based moisturizers will help you to retain more moisture. If you’re prone to sensitive skin, watch out for fragrances in your moisturizer, as these can cause irritation for some.

Opt for a Humidifier
Central heating and other sources of heat blast out hot air, drying the air out –and parching your skin along with it. Humidifiers put moisture back into the air, helping to keep your skin from drying out. Placing several humidifiers throughout your home can keep the moisture evenly distributed.

Avoid Hot Baths
While a hot bath may sound inviting in the middle of winter, you should try to avoid intensely hot showers or baths. Hot water breaks down the barriers in your skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. Instead, try a warm bath. A warm bath with essential oils can help to keep your skin soft. If you have dry, itchy skin, adding some oatmeal or baking soda can also relieve some of the itchiness.

Finally, don’t rule out the importance of a healthy diet. Nutrient-dense whole foods that are packed full of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can do wonders to keep skin healthy. Opt for foods like avocados, nuts, eggs, and salmon to help stave off dry skin. And be sure to drink plenty of water –important for healthy skin.
